Lower Fraser Collaborative Table

The Lower Fraser Collaborative Table (LFCT) is a cooperative initiative that brings together various stakeholders in the Lower Fraser River region.

LFCT includes representatives from 23 First Nations, represented by the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, seven recreational fishing organizations, and individual commercial fishers.

LFCT aims to foster dialogue and collaboration around the shared salmon resource of the Lower Fraser, namely conservation of salmon and other fish species, sustainable access for harvesting, and improved communication among stakeholders.

The LFCT evolved from an earlier initiative called the Fraser River Peacemakers, which was formed in 2009 to address conflicts between recreational anglers and First Nation food fishers.

In June 2022, the LFCT developed and ratified a three-year strategic plan to guide its efforts. Currently, the table is supported by the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and the province of British Columbia.

LFCT emphasizes face-to-face meetings and building trust among different groups to find common ground and work towards shared goals of preserving and managing fish stocks in the Lower Fraser River. While initially focused on reducing conflicts on the river, the LFCT has expanded its focus to include broader issues of fisheries management, conservation, and sustainable harvesting practices.

The Lower Fraser Collaborative Table represents an innovative approach to fisheries management that brings together diverse stakeholders to address complex challenges facing salmon and other fish species in the Lower Fraser River ecosystem.
